Invest in a real Christmas tree

Nothing beats the evocative smell and feel of a real Christmas tree. Walking into your hotel and seeing a tastefully decorated Christmas tree sets the tone for the whole stay and immediately gets people in the festive spirit.

Add some homemade decorations or some wrapped boxes around the base to make it look extra special.

Offer kids a lucky dip

If you’re running a family friendly hotel or bed and breakfast, then one way to impress your smaller guests is to offer them a Christmas gift. This could be personalised if you know how many children will be staying and how old they are but the joy is really in the unwrapping, so don’t worry too much about spending a fortune or making it complicated.

Invest in a large stocking or Christmas sack and invite young guests to choose a gift when they arrive. If you wanted to make it even more exciting, wrap the lucky dip gifts and place them under the tree and invite children to choose from there.

Keep a well-stocked plate of mince pies at reception

While the children are unwrapping their presents, why not welcome your grown-up guests with a mince pie on check in? It’s a really low-cost way to make a great first impression and to create the impression of Christmas indulgence to come.

Create a special Christmas drinks menu

Is it really Christmas is you haven’t had a glass of mulled wine? To help with the feeling of Christmas decadence, create a bespoke Christmas drinks menu that includes festive options like mulled wine, champagne cocktails or perhaps hot gin and ginger.

Again, this doesn’t have to be complicated – it can just be a Christmas twist on your regular drinks menu.

Invite in local singers

If you have a spacious bar or restaurant area, consider inviting a local choir in to perform some carols. This doesn’t have to be every night or even for very long but a few Christmas songs before dinner around a roaring log fire would make your guests’ stay wonderfully memorable. You could add a charitable angle by using the opportunity to raise money for a local cause that’s close to your heart.
